There is no job where you are wrong more publicly than weather. You can do everything right — every model, every run, thirteen years of pattern recognition — and the marine layer sits over Santa Monica until two in the afternoon and a man on the internet tells you that you had one job. You learn to be cheerful about it. That's genuinely part of the skill. But cheerful is a thing you produce, and producing it from 3am to noon is not free. For a long time my version of switching off was scrolling in bed until I fell asleep, which is not switching off. It's just being awake somewhere darker. What I needed was a hard edge on the day. Something with a beginning and an end that isn't me deciding I've had enough. Now it's twenty minutes in the sauna. Door shut, red light on, phone somewhere else in the house. Four or five times a week, and I'm not precious about which days. It's the Solara — full-spectrum infrared, medical-grade 660nm and 850nm red light, and it runs anywhere from 77 up to 150 degrees so I'm not committing to the hottest version of it on a Tuesday. Twenty minutes is a strange amount of time. Too short to start anything, too long to just stand there. That's exactly why it works — there's nothing to do in there correctly. I come out and the day is closed. That's the whole benefit I'm claiming. 35 by 37 by 63 inches, so it lives in a corner and doesn't take a room hostage. Plugs into a standard outlet, which I did not believe until it was in the house. Certified free of toxic heavy metals and phthalates. Ultra-low EMF.
