🇪🇸In a small spanish town in Andalucía, where summer temperatures can soar past 104°F, one of the most creative climate solutions came from an unexpected source: a group of local grandmothers.

After plastic street covers made the heat worse, the town called on crochet instructor Eva Pacheco. She gathered around 40 “granny students” to rethink the idea of shade. Since 2019, they’ve hand-crocheted more than 500 square meters of colorful synthetic wool panels, forming a giant canopy above the shopping streets!

Each year, about 30 new panels are added, turning the district into a constantly evolving artwork. And beyond aesthetics, the impact is real: temperatures beneath the canopy have dropped by over 10°F while also providing UV protection! For many widowed and isolated women involved, it’s also become a social lifeline and a tight-knit community project.
