On Monday, Colombia was hit by one of the strongest earthquakes to strike the country in the last decade. More than 230 people have lost their lives, thousands have been affected, and many families are now waiting to find out whether it is safe to return home. The damage is widespread. Homes have collapsed, hundreds of schools and health centres have been affected, roads have been damaged and several airports are closed. In the immediate aftermath, people urgently need safe water, food, temporary shelter and health services. NRC is coordinating with authorities and humanitarian partners and stands ready to support those most in need. The country already suffers from a severe humanitarian situation, and is the third most neglected in the world. It is crucial that Colombia receives the support it needs. Before the earthquake, there were more than nine million people with humanitarian needs, including those displaced by conflict as well as refugees and migrants. 📷 Federico Rios/The New York Times
