"Black men just can't shave." That's what I always thought too. That our coarse, curly hair just makes it impossible. That we're supposed to either live with a beard or suffer with razor bumps. That it's just how our genetics work and there's nothing we can do about it. I was wrong. I'm writing this because I want to help someone avoid the 3 years of frustration I went through believing that myth. If you're dealing with razor bumps right now - the painful inflammation, the dark spots, the cycle of shaving and regretting it - I figured it out for you, When my facial hair came in around 21, I thought shaving would be simple. It wasn't. My neck and jawline were covered in red bumps within 24 hours. Painful, inflamed, some with pus. I did what everyone does - went to the dermatologist. Got prescribed benzoyl peroxide and topicort ointment. Worked for a while, then stopped. Bumps came right back. I tried everything from the store.... Bump Stopper... Bump Patrol.. special razors... I wasted so much money over the years. My barber would trim my beard and every single time, these awful bumps would appear. I'd go home, look in the mirror, and just feel defeated. I tried the full routine I found on Reddit: hot towel before shaving, exfoliating, shaving with the grain, moisturizing after. Still got bumps. So I gave up on shaving.... Grew a full beard for a year. Figured our hair just doesn't work with razors. That's what everyone says, right? "Us Black boys can't be using razors, that's just how it is." But then summer hit and I wanted to shave it off. Bad idea. As my facial hair grew back, I had breakouts all over my lower cheeks and around my mouth. It itched and hurt. I couldn't shave anymore, too painful. Even with clean sheets, clean towels, being careful with everything - didn't matter. That's when I really started digging into WHY this keeps happening to us - and more importantly, if it's actually something we just need to live with, I learned that yes, our hair is coarse and curly. When you shave it close, the tip gets caught under the skin when it grows back. This causes inflammation, white blood cells, pus, pain, and dark marks. But here's the part nobody talks about: Most products make it worse. All those harsh chemicals, alcohol-based toners, aggressive exfoliants - they irritate your skin. More irritation = more inflammation = more bumps. We're not the problem. The products are. The real issue isn't that Black men can't shave. It's that most products weren't designed for our hair texture and skin in the first place. I was about to accept living with a beard I didn't want. Then I found something that actually worked. A company called Earthly Derm makes this turmeric bar specifically for Black men with coarse, curly hair. Not kitchen turmeric - cold-pressed turmeric with particles small enough to actually penetrate our skin and reach the hair follicle where the problem starts. Most turmeric soaps are heat-processed with particles too big to do anything. This one's different. Made for our hair texture from the beginning. Not adapted. Built for us. I was skeptical. I'd tried everything. But they had a 60-day guarantee and I was desperate. First week - skin felt less irritated. Second week - wasn't waking up with new bumps. The ones I had were less inflamed. Third week - dark spots started fading. I could see my actual skin tone coming back . By week 6, I could shave without dreading what my neck would look like the next day. Those thick, curly hairs that used to get trapped under my skin were growing out normally. My barber noticed: "Yo, what'd you do? Your neck looks clean." Turns out Black men CAN shave. We just need products actually made for us. I don't know if it will work for you, but more black guys need to know about it. It changed my life.
